Sayers is most famous for her autobiography Peig (ISBN ), but also for the folklore and stories which were recorded in Machnamh Seanmhná (An Old Woman's Reflections, ISBN ). The books were not written down by Peig, but were dictated to others.Seeing a photo of Peig Sayers in her shawl earlier, I was reminded of this photo I have which was taken in Ennis in the 1970s.
Peig Sayers was born in Baile an Bhiocáire near Dunquin in West Kerry. As a young girl, she worked as a servant girl for a Dingle shopkeeper. She was happy in Dingle and treated well but returned home to Dunquin for health reasons.The Belfast-born medic and accoucheur, William Drennan, like Nicholas Peacock, took a long time to commit to marriage.
He found Micheál Sayers and Coady, Peig’s brother-in-law, smoking pipes by the fire, the walls of the neat cabin covered with pictures of students and children, professors and editors, and a church of Scotland bishop, Peig’s ‘best friend’, who visited the Blaskets and remained with her until he had mastered the Irish language.
